The Tanto first made its appearance around the 8th century during the Heian Period. These first Tantos were almost always used as functional weapons and as a result did not have much artistic quality. Another result of the their functional use was that not many survived from this period. It was during this time, and the years leading up to the 16th century, that the Tanto was worn with the Tachi as the Daisho of the Samurai. Women would also sometimes wear a smaller version of the Tanto in their Obi for self defense. This is the Handmade T10 shirasaya Tanto. The blade of the tanto is T10 tool steel with a clay tempered hamon (tempered line). The tanto comes fully sharpened.
The sheath is redwood which has a natural wood grain finish. The blade is sharp, full tang and fully functional.It can cut targets like paper, bamboo, tatami mats, water bottles. Blade: The blade of the sword has been constructed from T10 tool steel. The steel has been thoroughly refined and clay tempered. It comes sharp and it is full tang. When the blade is quenched the sword is covered with a clay solution, except for the edge of the blade. The blade is then heated and quenched in water. Since the Ha cools much more quickly than the rest of the blade the molecules in the steel expand and force the softer steel to fold back. Saya (sheath): The Saya is made of natural redwood.
The mouth of saya is protected by a black horn which gives extra protection to the throath. Itself is also made of natural redwood and the blade is full tang. Please view above picture A. This sword has been hand forged by our Japanese traditional method, Clay Tempering.
The gray area is the clay covered range. The Smith puts clay on the blade and leaves the edge clear.
The blade will be heated to red then quenched into water. Therefore, the clay covered area helps the blade to keep its flexibility.
